One nice touch was being able to choose what you're executions did, whether that's replenishing health, boosting damage or XP or gaining 'Focus' a sort of slow motion mode that allows you to build combos quickly and kick enemies across the level.Įnemy variety is. This would also explain why I always seemed to be overflowing with XP I couldn't spend as further stat increases are locked behind levels.

I got most of the way through the game thinking there were only four or five executions, it turns out there is a menu where you can spend XP to unlock new ones.

The enemy (or enemies, double executions are possible) flash blue or yellow depending on which button you should press and you're treated to a delightfully brutal death scene.

If you get an enemy below a certain level of HP, pulling the right trigger starts an execution quicktime event. The executions though, those were great fun. Otherwise the combat system is pretty standard, block, counter, dodge roll, mix up your attacks between sword and shield so you don't get blocked yourself. This lead to me continually trying to whack people in the head instead of blocking and getting whacked myself. This wouldn't be a huge problem if you could rebind the controls, but you are limited to three keyboard layouts and a single controller one. Possibly too familiar, as (on an xbox 360 controller) the Y button is used for shield attacks, not blocks and counters like in these other games. As it turns out its all rather simple, if you've played any of the Arkham games or Shadow of Mordor you will be quite familiar with the formula. At first I was a little worried that Ryse would have a complex combo system, bringing back painful memories of utter failure when my friend lent me his copy of Devil May Cry 3.

The levels and the characters look spectacular, with the gleam of light on metal, detailed textures and surprisingly realistic faces. The fact that I'm writing this on Saturday morning is probably a good indicator of the game's length.įirst impressions, my god this game is beautiful. I've had this game in my Steam library since a couple of sales ago and since I had a long weekend I decided to give it a go.
